Having worked at a Toys R' Us I can tell you in general consumers (especially parents) are relatively "stupid" when it comes to video games.
I remember one time we had a parent throw a fit that they bought a Playstation console as a gift but no one in the store told her that you basically need a memory card to save your game so she came back and made a huge stink about no one telling her that.
Parents accidentally buying the wrong version of a game also happens allllllllllll the time. I had many instances where a parent was buying a PS2 game thinking it would work on the PS1 for example and I saved about 3-4 parents the headche of finding out the hard way by just clarifiying with them which system they have at home but a lot of store clerks don't care to do that.
