We have a history of heart problems in our family. My mothers doctor just recommended to her to get some type of fitness band that can track her heart rate 24/7. Because this will link to her Galaxy S5 or any phone, this looks like a good idea.

Consider getting her one of those bluetooth 4.0-enabled heart rate monitors strapped to the chest instead.

Prices start at about 30 dollars (so much cheaper than a MS band), and ultimately they are much more precise than smartwatch-integrated solutions. Also, their battery lasts for ages, while the MS band's battery will only last a maximum of 2 days. And these heart rate monitors are using a popular bluetooth standard, so they are usually perfectly compatible, and you will easily find dozens of different smartphone apps supporting the device to choose from, whatever model you pick.

The only disadvantage they have is that some of them may not work well during sleep, because lying on the side might cause these straps to lose body contact. But since it's for monitoring heart problems, the focus probably isn't on heart rate during sleep anyway.
