I'm a lifelong Nintendo fan and I never believed that the Wii U would hold 2nd over the XBone. Year one sales were enough to tell me that we were looking at GCN, and not Wii, type numbers for the U. That said, I'd love to see a bit of a turnaround and maybe even 25-35 million consoles moved by the end of this generation. 18-22 million seems a lot more likely, though.
At this point, some might argue at all points, I think Nintendo is interested in making the Wii U profitable vs. beating Microsoft in consoles shipped. That's one big reason we might not see a Wii U price drop for this holiday.*
*Last quarter made a little money, with Smash, amiibo, Captain Toad, existing 2014 exclusives, and the holiday boost, Nintendo could be looking at some nice profits for Q3.
