Its estimated bill of materials was ~$160 in January 2012, so, if it wasn't already profitable then, it became not too later. Obviously there are also the initial costs to recoup, and the part of online services offered for free, but if we include physical and digital SW sales it should have already given a small overall profit.
Also, Sony indirectly confirms this, as PSV isn't amongst the reasons it listed for the losses (the main reason stated for entertainment division losses in the last annual report was all the costs related to PS4 launch).

Makes me wonder why the 3DS getting dropped to $170 was so expensive for Nintendo then. Vita obviously has a lot more going on under the hood.
