It shows off very well that half of the console sales of the Gamecube where made in the first 2 years and practically stopped selling after that. If the Gamecube had continued selling like it did in the beginning, it would have outsold the original Xbox easely.
That's also why I think comparing their sales to extrapolate the final sales of the Wii U can't work, as the Wii U probably won't stop dead in it's track anytime soon.
