While I wish all of this were true, sadly, it isn't.
MK8 did well to start, but in reality, after the bump it's only raised the Wii U's base selling rate by about 4k a week, if that. Compare with Xbox 1, which is consistently outselling by at least twice as much per week. Xbox has had its low points, but it will catch up and overtake, because Nintendo have played most of their trump cards, and Microsoft still have a few up their sleeve.
Smash Bros 3DS is selling out because there's a huge 3DS user base. It has already equalled MK8 in sales, in just 5 weeks. Whether Nintendo's strategy of using the 3DS Smash as an appetiser for the Wii U version, as well as the Amiibos and interconnectivity between the two versions will result in good sales, remains to be seen. It could be a genius move - it could be a terrible disaster. We'll know for sure in January.
The question is really, how long can the Wii U hold on to it's current second position place, considering that XOne is creeping up behind it by 100k every couple of weeks, and even faster, more recently.
