Its actually pretty simple. When Sony doesn't screw up like they did with the PS3, mind you ~80 million really isn't a screw up, they own the console market. They have shown that with the PS1, PS2, and yet again with the PS4. Time and time again people say that Sony has no 'gahmz' yet they are the ones with the most games every single generation. They have the most studios working for them making top notch quality games. Microsoft really didn't screw up, but rather Sony made them look REALLY bad since they are their main competitor. Just look back at E3 2013 where it all started to see what I am talking about. This took place in America and they were humiliated because Sony made them look ridiculous.
Nintendo learned very quickly that they simply could not compete with Sony and therefore targeted a different audience. You see cheap shots at Microsoft from Sony all the time yet you never see them do that to Nintendo. Microsoft is learning the hard way that Sony has locked up the home console market.
