Dropping backwards compatibility?
Not sure how much it would shave off the price, and it might make many people unhappy, but it might be an option.

The reason backward compatibility on Wii U works so well is the same reason bc worked so well on the Wii. GameCube, Wii, and Wii U all use the same system arcitecture which makes bc easy, cost-effective, and flawless. In fact, the only reason GameCube support was eventually dropped from the Wii was because Nintendo got rid of the physical components needed for GameCube controllers to work in order to cut costs. Since all the Wii's accessories are wireless, that leaves nothing for Wii U to cut. So in otherwords, cutting off bc will not only do nothing to lower the cost of Wii U. It'll also lower the system's value.

Removing the Gamepad isn't as option. It's too ingrained with the system. I don't think making the screen size smaller would be a good thing. But perhaps cutting some of that extra plastic off could do something. More importantly, can't Nintendo do a redesign similar to what Sony did with the PS3?
