Almost always there were dumbsters around. A lot of the time she would get kidnapped leaving you to control Leon alone. So she wasn't as much as a participant as Ellie was.

The dumpsters were virtually absent from the castle and weren't abundant even in the island and village sections.

Ellie's role as a participant was hampered a bit by the fact that in certain sequences she visibly broke the rules of the game world, like being invisible (and intangible) to the clickers.

Still she could actually help you when needed, something you can't say about Ashley. Also she wasn't a weak girl running around, she was an empowered woman, you liked those i thought, and even protected Joel.

Ellie's definitely a better character, in terms of story and persona, I just preferred Ashley's integration into the gameplay.
