I honestly have to say, I don't care. As long as the game is moderately long, fun and entertaining I won't care about a male/female Link or a male/female Zelda (because is Link is a she, why couldn't Zelda be a he?).

With that said, if the idea is to give players the option to play as a male or a female, why not give the players to play as both Link and Zelda at the same time? Why not make a game where Ganon already rules the world or Kingdom and Link and the once princess of the Kingdom Zelda work together to as the resistance to get rid of Ganon? That way we could have Link missions (leading him to find the Master Sword), Zelda missions (leading her to find a magical bow, for example) and then other minor quests where we could decide which character to use. And the final battle? Easy, first split the assault to Ganon's castle in 2 as Zelda and Link split to have more chances and give us the option to play both, and then give us the option to choose who will be play as during the final battle while the other character acts as a supporter. Heck, they could even allow a button press to switch characters and play as both Link and Zelda during the battle as one character may be better than the other in different stages of the fight.
