Doest help the wiiU that this year it has competition from the PS4 and XB1.

Wait what?^^

Since when do those system share the same market demographic?

And how do you explain that the sales of the Wii U increased after the release of the new consoles while selling nothing in the year before?

You see thats the funny thing and the exact problem nintendo is facing right now. Now they are competing in the eaxct same demographic with the PS4/XB1 in the very same way they were competing with the PS2/XB with the GC.  People shouldn't get it twisted. Nintendo makes game consoles. When you consider their best selling games, these are games that regardless of how cartoony they may look are actually made for a real gamer audience. I am talking about the people that will buy mario, bayonetta, zelda, metroid, splatoon...etc.

And they are failing at competing in that same space. The people that made the wii what it was are people that honestly rather play games on a cell phone.

And sales of teh wiiU has increased simply cause there is more to play on it now (also don't forget a certain MK8 bundle). And next year it will increase again or at least it should if its follwoing the trends of every console released before today. In the very same way that PS4/XB1 sales should be better next year than they are this year. Its in 2016 that things will get really bad for the wiiU and the XB1 too.

I don't share that thought. Yes their main stays are easily appealing to core gamers but core gamers know what games to expect on a Nintendo console so they will not limit themselves to it and have at least one other gaming option. Hence that demographic isn't shared between Nintendo and the other manufacturers. Those who only buy a Nintendo console are the hardcore Nintendo fans who are certainly not in the demographic of the other teams as they won't even consider a different console as their first choice. Then we have the people who are core gamers but will decide between X and P and maybe PC but won't consider Nintendo at all as they want to play multiplayer games.

I just don't think a demographic that honestly has to decide between Nintendo and MS/Sony as their only platform for the whole gen exists. So there is no real share between the pools of gamers.

If you want to play Nintendo games, you go left.
If you want to play MS/Sony games, you go right.
If you want to play multiplat games only, you go right.
If you want to play Nintendo games and multiplat you go left or both.
If you want to play multiplat and MS/Sony exclusives you go right.
If you want to play multiple exclusives you go both or whatever exclusives you prefer most if you don't have enough cash.

I just don't see a big middleground that would be shared by all 3 of them which would make it hard to decide. It's pretty much clear from the getgo which platforms you choose so there is no stealing from each other.
