Because companies actually believe the same thing you do, even though there have been several examples of games releasing in the summer or late spring and still performing extremely well, TLOU and MGS 4 for example. The holidays on the other hand are always jam packed with stuff and every year there are several games just drowning in the masses, when those games would be way better suited for an empty summer release.
Movies have summer blockbusters every year, so why not games as well?
