At least for me, Smartphones are the reason why Vita fails. I did buy a Vita at launch and loved it. But I more and more lost interest in it and ultimately, when Smartphones became even more powerful than Vita, I didn't see the point in carrying the Vita around. I really don't use it anymore, not even for Remote Play or something. There just isn't a need anymore for dedicated handhelds imo. You can play basically anything even on cheap phones today. Sure, the controls aren't quite comparable, but after some getting used to it, you'll be fine. I did play through the whole of GTA San Andreas with touch controls and did enjoy it quite a bit. So if the controls are well made, it's not that great of a problem.
Sure, that's my personal opinion and it might not be true for the whole market. But I think there are at least some people who are in the same boat as me. What would help however would be a new, sleek Vita with phone features. I mean, they already had a 3G model, all they need is a telephone app, maybe support for Android apps if they can manage that. The control pad could just slide out like with the PSP Go or the Xperia Play. I would totally buy such a device as a replacement for my iPhone. But a stand-alone Vita? No, thanks.
