You never think in terms of "generations", that never made much sense in consumer electronics. The fact is the N3DS is a new "iteration" of hardware and there's nothing you can do to change that. Lumping the two consistently different platforms together to boast the results is disingenuous at best. 

Your reasons for this being an excuse for people to not see the sales combined is half-baked since they have a valid point about exclusive software differentiating the the two platforms hence seperating them making sense ... 

psp go + psp added together gb + gbc added together vita + ps tv added together ds +dsi added together and finally like the 2DS 3DS+2DS+N3DS added together.

You can say exclusive all you want, it doesn't change the fact tbat the n3ds is a 3ds
