Sean Malstrom grew up with the NES. And I think he might be in his 40s by now, if not his 30s. "New school" for his generation (as well as mine, I'm pushing 30) is synonymous with 3D graphics. The Sega Saturn, Sony Playstation and N64 ushered in a new era (3D). We grew up with 8-bit and 16-bit.
I strongly disagree with Malstrom though that the DS and Wii were necessarily old-school. The DS has lots of old-school 2D games and New Super Marios Bros was a hit. But the DS' Touch Generation series is what defined the DS. And then third-party game developers and indie developers decided to make these kind of games for smartphones and tablets and the rest is history. And the Wii was mostly centered around motion control gaming. Which didn't define the NES (unless you count Duck Hunt and the Track Pad for the Track & Field game. I had a lot of fun with those games as a kid).
