Yeah unfortunately it does look like the handheld market is breathing its last. Yes, the 3DS has been massively successful but it came out just before the really big take off of decent spec mobiles and tablets so this has fragmented the game players tremendously. I cant see Sony bringing out a successor to the Vita so really that leaves Nintendo.

For me, the only way a new handheld would succeed is if from the off, it was compatible with the entire library of an older generation. If the Vita supported digital PS2 games it would have sold a hell of a lot better than it did. For a new handheld to come out an succeed it really has to hit the ground running and offer something that countless android and apple devices already cant. And to me, that has to be a massive library and back catalogue right from the off.
