Prior to the dual analog controller, first person shooters on consoles were an absolute pain to control. Even Goldeneye with the excellent N64 analog stick was cumbersome due to either having the use the C-buttons to move and the left stick to aim(the opposite of todays standard where the left stick is to move) or use the stick to move forward/backward and turn and using the C-buttons to look up/down and strafe. Dual sticks were an innovation and have been a staple in almost every major console since. Same with quad-shoulder buttons.
