I also think if the n64 was cd based the playstation would have died in that gen. In those days Sony first party was non existent compared to Nintendo. And the n64 woul have titles like metal gear solid and final fantasy 7. And it would have been Saturn vs n64.

But that didn't happen so.

True, Nintendo not going with CDs was the single biggest reason for Sony's rise to the top during that generation.  Without that strategic blunder by Nintendo, 3rd parties would not have left them en masse for greener pastures, and Sony would not have enjoyed the large library of 3rd party exclusives that also carried them into and right on through the PS2 generation.

SEGA on the other hand was on the decline in the mid 90s, and the launch blunders only gave the Saturn a quick death rather than making it a slow, painful demise throughout the generation.  In hindsight the only way SEGA would have been successful in the 32/64-bit gen was if they delayed the launch of the Saturn a year and made it more powerful and easier to program for so that it would be more like an N64 with a CDROM drive.  The Dreamcast was what the Saturn should've been, but it was too little too late by the time it hit the market.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.
