Dragon's Dogma has sold a good deal over 2 mill and that is not even counting the PC version or Dark Arizen DLC. It most definitely was not a  disaster. 

Shipped 1.3 million units (VGChartz has it way overtracked) http://www.capcom.co.jp/ir/english/business/million.html, no idea what DA actually sold but 700k+ to push the combined sales over 2 million seems a streatch given the sales of the OG release.
