Square Enix announced that it brought a declaratory judgment suit against SNK Playmore as a response to previous accusations of copyright infringement. SNK sued Square Enix in May, claiming the Final Fantasy publisher used copyrighted SNK characters without permission in the High Score Girl manga. SNK alleged that characters from The King of Fighters and Samurai Shodown were used more than 100 times without permission. (More)

I don't usually make threads but, wow, this situation really bugs the hell out of me. If you've ever read High Score Girl, you'll understand that it's an interesting look back at gaming in Japan during the 1990s, especially as it relates to a couple of kids to whom gaming was very important. More than anything, it's a celebration of the games that became the foundation for the rebirth of the medium. That SNK would sue over this, it really bothers me, especially considering how much the main character absolutely loves their creations. I hate watching corporations behave so childishly, especially when it would ruin an excellent manga over pure greed. Go Square Enix. Hope this doesn't kill the planned anime version.
