Square Enix announced that it brought a declaratory judgment suit against SNK Playmore as a response to previous accusations of copyright infringement. SNK sued Square Enix in May, claiming the Final Fantasy publisher used copyrighted SNK characters without permission in the High Score Girl manga. SNK alleged that characters from The King of Fighters and Samurai Shodown were used more than 100 times without permission.  (More)

I don't usually make threads but, wow, this situation really bugs the hell out of me.  If you've ever read High Score Girl, you'll understand that it's an interesting look back at gaming in Japan during the 1990s, especially as it relates to a couple of kids to whom gaming was very important.  More than anything, it's a celebration of the games that became the foundation for the rebirth of the medium.  That SNK would sue over this, it really bothers me, especially considering how much the main character absolutely loves their creations.  I hate watching corporations behave so childishly, especially when it would ruin an excellent manga over pure greed.  Go Square Enix.  Hope this doesn't kill the planned anime version.

Sighh, these companies just can't get along now can they? How lamee! With that being said, if SE really was using SNK characters, they should have at least asked for permission

It's intrinsic to the story, which I'm sure is what Square will argue.  It would be silly to have a work about gamers in the 90s if you couldn't mention Street Fighter or Nintendo.  And, as far as I know, no one else has sued over this.  The truth is, this is free publicity.  Companies pay for product placement like this.

It's really just about SNK being greedy.  I hope a standard is set from this.

In the manga, SNK among other companies referenced are credited

Yea, I get what your saying but its just, from a business standpoint, you just gotta ask to make sure and SE should have known this cause they have been in the anime business and business in general long enough to know that there are certain things you just gotta ask for. I am not saying this is right but at the sametime, if there really is any merit to this and SNK wins, I would perfectly understand why

If they are using their characters and making profit on it then just crediting them isn't enough. They need their permission, and most importantly to pay royalties to them.

Royalties?  For mentioning them in the manga?  That's horrible.  That's so awful.  I hate this world where you can't mention any products of the past without being sued.  It disgusts me, not to mention how idiotic it is.  I hope they keep giving free publicity to Street Figther and edit Samurai Spirts to Ninja Ghosts or something.  Expecting to be paid for having your characters being mentioned in a manga about gaming is nothing but pure greed.
