Thing is, we always expect Nintendo to "bring it", and then end up disappointed. This has happened so many times. It's the 8th gen now, and Nintendo have just embraced the Internet on their platforms, and in a way that's left a lot of people wanting. I can only hope they'll step up NEXT gen and mutha effin show us how it's done! Maybe it's time for them to copy Sony (instead of the other way around) and hire help from outside of Japan.

Not living up to your promises gets you that. But at the same time, Iwata really made a big deal out of this. I don`t think he spent all that time in his presentation for nothing.
Actually, his comments regarding the notion of platform and his other comments of handling both systems as brothers and how they should share software, to point out that he won't let people down on the matter.
Nintendo's main problem has been on the software side, where the no shortages promises have not been met. In terms of how they handle the HW, i can't recall they promising something and not delivering.
Wii and DS had online play, they just didn't have an online shop and ability to patch/DLC. It is a big deal, but at least we got the most important part.

They're not quite living up to industry standards when it comes to certain features. I get that they don't wanna compete specs-wise, and I'm fine with that. But their other features are lagging behind. That's worriesome as it shows that they can't really handle things like that, and that means that the interactions between their future home console and portable (the brothers/sisters) might be clunky. Looking at past experiences anyways.
I'm kinda hoping for something aking to the 3DS cartridges to replace DVDs for Nintendo next gen, saving the game on the cartridge - but having the option to also save it on the hard drive on the console and "in the cloud".
Their HW is always robust and good, but the SW inside, that's what they're lacking. And getting "the most important part(s)" isn't going to cut it for Nintendo. They need to be at the forefront, together with MS and Sony, innovating what it means to play. That's what they did with NES, N64, Wii, GB and DS (And SNES to a lesser degree). Classic systems.
