Believe it or not, entertainment is a necessity and people's ability to reduce the quantity of entertainment they need is heavily limited. Generally speaking, in an ecconomic downturn people move away from your more expensive forms of entertainment to the less expensive ... Videogames, movies, books, and television are among the least expensive ways for a person or group to waste some time.
This (of course) doesn't mean that all companies within the industry are going to do aswell as others; and it is fairly likely that systems like the PS2 could see higher sales, and used/'Best Sellers' games could sell better than they would if there wasn't an ecconomic downturn.
