It's as true as we can possibly know it... It's part of Sony's execs declarations at their last financial report and conference. It's not just PR, they're legally obligated to provide correct information at those events. There's a transcript here:
If you search for the phrase "catch up" in that page, you'll see the part where they make it very clear that they're only hoping to break even on each hardware unit towards the end of the current fiscal year.

What you're seeing is that their gaming division made a profit, not that PS3 hardware itself did (that would contradict the declarations I pointed to in the first part of this post).
