1. The Incredibles - Such a fun movie, and my personal favorite. I have always enjoyed how Pixar movies (barring a few recent releases) deal with 'grown up' subject matter but in a way that will not alienate family audiences, and outside of the first 10 minutes of Up this movie seemed to push that envelope a bit further. The family was a REAL family, with real issues. The action is superb and it is so funny. One of the best villains in a superhero movie so far (since, you know, he actually has a motive outside 'I'm evil').

2. Princess Mononoke - What really grabbed me about this movie was how grey all of the characters were. There was no good or evil. People (and the creatures) were just who and what they were. Masterful storytelling.

3. Pan's Labyrinth - This is just a beautiful movie. The fantasy of this movie just seemed 'real.' The creatures were brilliantly realized and fit the tone of the movie perfectly. The villian was someone you could really hate, too.

4. The Dark Knight - This is almost exclusively because of the Joker. What a brilliant imagining of that character. In general, I do prefer villains that have a motive that you can relate to (think Loki or Syndrome) but sometimes watching someone who just wants to see the world burn is so much fun! I have always been a bit of a sucker for 'darker' movies as well, so for me this is the best live action superhero movie.

5. Terminator 2 - From my personal favorite director, James Cameron. His movies, to me, are just so technically perfect. The pacing, the action, the heart, a good story. He checks all the boxes. Even 23 years later this movie holds up as one of the greatest action movies ever made.
