It's more about the fact that he's willing to change his opinion.  This means he's willing to learn.  

If someone is unwilling to change their viewpoint, there's no point in having a discussion.  Discussions are about sharing ideas, so that we may learn.  

He's human, and he knows he isn't always going to be right.  

That isn't the point.

A person says what they say because they have conviction. You're not saying what you're saying because you don't believe what you're saying, are you? No one is asking him if he believes what he said yesterday or even last year. I'm asking if he believes the words he says NOW.
