Nintendo probably continues to do it for the moola. However, people can decide to not be stupid/nostalgic/whatever else and just delete their old save. I did that many times as a kid.
Although I know that wouldn't work for everyone as some people are insane Pokémoners and probably have games filled with Pokémon that have insane stats and/or rare breeds.
