There is however a country called United States of America with American being the only recognised demonym for people from there.

American people can refer to any people from the contintents of America.

So, countries like Brazil, Panama, Canada, etc.

Those people can all call themselves "Americans" too. 

I think when you speak as a citizen from the US, you should just refer to yourself from your state. 

Californian, Virginian, etc.

That's pretty stupid honestly, lol. Why would the average person from the UK or Germany or Japan or Australia give two sh*ts what state in the US you're from? It's like a Canadian saying they're a British Columbian (can you imagine how confusion that would cause?). Everyone knows what American means, the literal definition of it is irrelevant.
