The Wii U actually does not have god software sales- they are terrible - even Nintendo has acknowledged as much -

Their mainline titles sell fine, problem is they have too few and there's nothing else that "sells" because there's just nothing much else there. Like I said, there are 15-20 real titles on the console, a number already passed by PS4/X1 because of third party support. To that end, the numbers the WiiU has managed to achieved, almost entirely based on its first party library and Nintendo, are actually highly impressive in a vacuum. They simply aren't impressive all things considered because Nintendo alone can't keep the console title-rich.

In the Gamecube era, when software uptake was crazy high and keeping the console profitable, they still had big titles like Soul Calibur and Resident Evil and otherwise filling in blanks and seeing high uptake along with Nintendo's own titles. But look at the WiiU, how many titles that aren't Nintendo aren't either: ports of old games or movie tie-ins?... Almost none.
