With the increase of developement time/costs for HD games (im also assuming it takes quite a bit more time/money to develop for 3DS compared to previous handhelds) Nintendo can no longer give strong support to two completely different peices of hardware and this would get even worse next gen as time/costs continue to increase.

Why next Gen? The New 3DS will have all the buttons of the game pad and could operate as one.

yes they will soon have the same button layout but there is much more to it than that, 3DS & Wii U are completely different pieces of hardware and Nintendo simply cant provide a strong software release schedule when trying to support two completely different pieces of tech.

they have already commented that the next handheld and console will be much more similar even going as far as saying they will be "brothers". they have also said that these devices will absorb the Wii U architecture.

basically next gen, Nintendo will have to release a single game and it will run on both devices whereas if they tried to do something like thtat this gen it would be like Smash Bros U/3D were its two different games in development simultaniously.
