Jim Sterling did a great video about the idea of how the industry is meant to be innovating and such alike but in the end the biggest selling games are FIFA, Madden, CoD... you get the idea. Games that are pretty much the same each time just with slight changes/improvements.
Innovation is not what we want in reality, we just want good games but the media is so obsessed with what is or isn't innovative they talk like it's the only think important. If they bought a Mass Effect like games out each year, with a few improvements and a new story, I'd be happy.
But innovation helps the industry move along so every now and then someone needs to do it. It doesn't need to be a big thing though, simple small things like releasing games like Borderlands which encourage 4 player co-op (sorry don't know what game did this first but Borderlands made it cool). Other games adopt it.... like survival of the fittest in a sense. Games that adapt with the industry survive.
... I wish i knew what I was on about.
Hmm, pie.
