What do you mean by automatic? I'm sure that you'll have to press a button to dodge, we just don't know what button yet. It's possible that it's a face button and the game randomly picks a direction to dodge in or that you can modify the direction yourself by combining the face button press with the left stick, or the dodge could be tied to L1/R1 (or LB/RB on Xbox One) so that you can choose to dodge left or right. Either way I'm sure that the game doesn't just auto dodge attacks for you. 

Reading the interviews, it sounded like you just had to press the button as long as you want then your character dodge all the attacks coming , and this is how everyone everywhere understood them

It's just how the negative portion of everyone's brain reacted to the news.  Everyone has to remember this doesn't take into account area attacks.  You might not be able to dodge those.  Also if you're controlling one character and dodging, what about your other party members?  Surely they don't just only dodge, so you'd have to make sure that they stay alive so you can initiate combos and disperse enemy attacks evenly among party members.
