Wii U's dreadful release schedule was because Nintendo were busy with tons of great 3DS games, hence why 2013 was such a big year for the handheld. After that they transitioned resources to Wii U, hence its improved release schedule recently and into 2015, and 3DS's lack of games this year and bleak outlook for 2015.

Nintendo are fully capable of sustaining a single platform with frequent quality 1st and 2nd party games, and the odd 3rd party release here and there. They cannot, however, sustain two, considering the resources needed for game development nowadays. That's why it looks next gen's going to be great for them.
