I see what you're saying, but Smash Bros. minus DLC would, by definition, be incomplete. Now, I'm confident that Smash Bros. at launch will be an excellent game. Having played the demo, I know it plays and looks like a dream.
Yet I'm still uncomfortable with Smash DLC, especially if it comes in the form of paid characters, stages, and modes. If Nintendo and Sakurai consider these worthy of the game, they should be included. If, conversely, they consider them lackluster or superfluous, they should be excluded. Now, if Nintendo wants to release a standalone thematic expansion pack, a la New Luigi, that's fine. But breaking the game into pieces and hiding those pieces behind a paywall is unacceptable. I want to unlock new characters and stages through skill and determination, not with a credit card.
This entire conversation might be moot, anyway. As umegames wrote, we still don't know in what form, if any, Smash DLC will arrive.
