You're ignoring the reason they went with Microsoft.
MS was willing to fund it and allow Insomniac to own the IP. Perhaps Sony wasn't willing to take the risk for something they couldn't own.
Perhaps they could have got a pubisher like EA to fund the project and go multiplat, but they would have kept the IP as well.
