I don't know much about The Witcher. Are there significant gameplay changes? Or does it play the same and just look better? Compare the Atari 2600 to the NES. Massive gameplay changes too numerous to name. A scrolling screen and being able to save your game are just a few examples. For the NES to SNES transition, I will grant that most of this power went to the graphics. More and better colors, getting rid of flicker, adding more on screen objects, etc. Still, there were games done that were just not possible on the NES. Star Fox is a good example of one. Pilotwings is another. Basically anything with heavy Mode 7 usage. SNES to N64 was an obvious big change. You already mentioned that. N64/PS to GC/PS2 allowed for the rise of the sandbox game. Compare Grand Theft Auto 2 to GTA3. Big open worlds were just not really possible on the previous generation. They would have been a foggy mess, or nearly empty. There was also a big uptick in the realism of sports games. What about last gen? We got motion controls with the Wii. It could have been done on the GC though. Everything else we got was basically the same game in a prettier package. Which is nice. I like good looking games. But it doesn't really change how the game is played. If there is something out there I am missing, I would love to hear it. This gen? I expect even less differences between it and the generation before. |
Yes the witcher 3 is improved in gameplay allthough you cant really see that from looking at a pic.Creating such a vast world could simply not be done for ps3/xbox360. Maybe you can call that graphics but a world that feels alive can really enchance the gameplay.(check skyrim mods on pc).And with the power of the new consoles you can just make alot more things happen in that big world.
They also improved geralt movements by alot making him fight more realistic and less doll like.
This gen will prob have no big changes in gameplay like the early years of gaming but you have to ask yourself, how can they possible add on that? And its much too early to really enjoy VR gaming i think.Outside of VR we MIGHT have hit a limit on possible ways to play a game(Or its just much more difficult to make something gameplaywise that isnt done allready) but the existing gameplay can always be improved and thats enough for me as there are enough different kinds of gameplay to enjoy allready:)
Also one of the things that has bettered the gamingworld are the indies getting more attention and big devs/pub noticing that wich could be making them more creative towards the future.
Yes im rather positive towards the years to come! :p
