I'll skip the why. I assume it's JRPG's, but either way.
Sony has sold well this gen, so far, and certainly the PS3 isn't a massive failure, but it did lower the Sony Playstation's brand name in most casual consumers eyes with its price tag, and lack of quality exclusives.
This stigmatization can last for years and does affect sales. Just ask Nintendo about its "kiddy" stigmitization with the Gamecube. Even now, being "kiddy" isn't a huge anti-Nintendo talking point, and instead it has switched to casual. Nintendo successfully shed the "kiddy" stigma in the eyes of many, many people, however they did pick up the "casual" stigma, which is a much better one to have, honestly.
So, sales are one thing, but being stigmatized as having an expensive console with a terrible library(which the PS3 isn't a really that expensive right now, and has at least some good games) is what will cost you profit in the future, and its bad marketing of your product, just like releasing Wind Waker was bad PR for Nintendo while the public was deciding if the kiddy stigma was true or not.
Sony can fix this the old fashioned way with good PR, price drop, and game releases, but it takes a while for public perception to catch up with reality.
I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.
NO NO, NO NO NO.
