Celebrate Elite's 30th anniversary by playing the remake for free
In three days, Elite will be 30 years old. Games half that age are called old, so that must make Elite antediluvian. Elite: Dangerous dev Frontier Developments will be doing some celebrating, but separate from that, an unofficial remastered version of the original will be available for free.
Programmer Christian Pinder put together the remake, Elite: The New Kind, back in ‘99, but copyright issues meant that it was taken down. With the birthday incoming, however, Elite co-designer Ian Bell has supported its return.
Feel the love: Nvidia is hosting a gargantuan global celebration of PC gaming tomorrow
Nvidia rather likes PC gaming - which isn’t particularly surprising given how many of our PCs are powered by the developer’s tech. But on Thursday, the folks at Nvidia want to show you how much, exactly, they like it with a rather barmy 24 hour celebration that they're calling Game24.
From London to Shanghai, there will be big live events along with a blow out online. Competitions, developer interviews, a very random assortment of celebrities, guest hosts, Dota 2 shenanigans and announcements from Nvidia and game devs are all being crammed into this 24 hour global party.
Final Fantasy IV snuck onto Steam today
Final Fantasy and PC gaming don’t tend to go hand in hand, yet on Steam, you can grab Final Fantasy III, VII, VIII, XI and XIV. That’s a lot of Roman numerals. When Cloud and chums arrived on Steam last year, the seventh outing was popular enough so that producer Yoshinori Kitase thought it would open the door to more iterations of the series landing on Valve’s big, all consuming platform.
And he was right, because not long after, Final Fantasy III was summoned. So I’m unlikely to shock anyone by pointing out that its successor has also arrived on Steam. Indeed, the only real surprise is that Final Fantasy IV appeared today with absolutely no fanfare or fuss whatsoever.
Blizzard's been tinkering away under World of Warcraft's hood
While most residents of Azeroth are hungrily devouring information on all the cosmetic and design changes, along with the new Draenor region, being brought to World of Warcraft in the impending Warlords of Draenor expansion, Blizzard has not forgotten about the tinkerers. After all, there are two races dedicated to those with gear grinding and knob twiddling predilections.
The developer has been doing a lot of work under the hood, and a new blog series - Engineer’s Workshop - begins today in an effort to break down the changes coming to World of Warcraft’s engine. First on the agenda is anti-aliasing.
Ripley's Believe It or Not: Team Fortress 2 gets Alien: Isolation items
In the long list of things that the Alien series is known for, there are three things that rise to the top - elements that, if they didn’t exist, would make the films - and subsequently Alien: Isolation - less impactful.
There’s the terror-inducing, nightmarish claustrophobia; the purposefully uncomfortable sexual overtones; and, of course, Team Fortress 2 hats. Yesterday number three would have been reserved for Ripley’s awesome perm, but no longer.
