Outside of a comic book convention I've never seen a 17-24 year old girl with a 3DS. And I travel a ton, am in about 30-40 major airports a year. Not once.

Iwata is talking about Animal Crossing numbers from Japan I believe btw. The demo split is not the same in North America, nor is Animal Crossing as popular in the West period.

I've never been to a comic book convention and I've seen several ladies my age playing their 3DS. Keep in mind the 3DS doesn't have a particularly massive install base in the US, and half of that install base is quite young of course. You're unlikely to randomly see an adult (man or woman) playing their 3DS even if they do have one. Anyway, we all know that anecdotal evidence is not admissible in court, or on vgchartz.

Mobile devices are also very popular in Japan (see Puzzle & Dragons), so the 3DS faces no less competition there than in the West.

I think we need to remember that Japan is still a very different culture than the US. The 3DS is different there in that it has basically replaced the home console, they don't have the PS4/XBox like we do here, the 3DS is basically that for the Japanese market.

It's also not uncommon to see rows of adults reading fantasy/adventure comics on a Japanese train, that's something you won't see in any city in North America/Europe.
