it really needed a big game for the summer, had Smash not been delayed then we would probably see pretty strong August/September but now they are gonna be some of the worst months ever for 3DS.

interesting, PS4 seemed to be doing fine in the summer. Dont recall a big game releasing in June/July/August

well June isnt Summer but if u want to count that, Watch Dogs released in the last week of May which was still moving units into June. UFC also released in June.

July had Last of Us Remastered and August had Madden and Diablo III.
