Perhaps (and this is only a theory) this is the result of any game that becomes too large (as a fandom/phenomenon). The greater the Final Fantasy legend becomes to gamers, the harder it is for each game to live up to an increasingly inflating measure. The more eyes that are drawn to it over time and the longer the franchise continues the more and more people start taking issue with, has it changed too much, has it not changed enough, does it no longer capture our imagination like the old ones did?
