Great post. I think it's very telling that people try to compare PS4 to the best selling consoles in history (PS2 and Wii) in order to attempt to downplay it.

If PS4 fizlles this holiday, then the haters will have a point. But the fact does remain that extremely high availability caused massive early sales to meet demand at a high level near launch. Past launches are riddled with hot selling consoles being supply limited, and there are TONS of examples of that. That's why you see some 300-400k off-holiday months for previous market leaders, but then you look at those older consoles and you find that yep, the supply was limited on launch.

Demand for PS4 is actually quite impressive considering the summer doldroms (games are more expensive to make, so you see less common releases of major titles of course). Things are going to bo bananas starting in September though.

PS4 is primed to have a solid shot at the biggest September sales of all time, or very near to it. If anyone tries to downplay those numbers when they're released, well I don't know what to say.

One could also easily make the point, going by indications that more PS4 Destiny Bundles have already been sold than XB1 Titanfall bundles have been sold in ALL of 2014, that a decent amount of customers were moved from June-August into September, nerfing the PS4's sales somewhat. Balancing it out, an average of June-September might well turn out to be ~375k roughly. We'll know soon enough.

It goes without saying that the people trying to downplay the PS4 sales are .. predictable, to be kind. And that's all I can say about that.

Yep, you two hit it on the noggin. You cannot form a conclusion about the PS4's performance until after you have observed its first autumn and non-launch winter. For instance, when fatslob said that he's disappointed with the PS4's performance, he really means that he's disappointed with the PS4's summer performance. However, that's not indicative of how it will be doing overall and we won't know that until after the holidays.

That also reminds me of when the Wii started to die off, though it was still out selling the 360/PS3.  It's sales during most of the year ranged from meh to good, with the other systems occasionally beating it.  But, when those holidays hit, damned if the Wii didn't pick up so much steam it would still outsell the other two.  Were Nintendo fans disappointed by the Wii's sales in those years?  Nope.  It was still whipping the other two.  It's just that it sold the most during the holidays.
