If you mean they can't make a platformer that compares, I agree entirely, though UbiSoft came very close with Rayman 2.

The latter mainly, each generation Nintendo are able to make a Mario game, which change to the not only the developments of the system but gameplay. They didn't just keep Mario in 2D and stagnate or struggle to adapt (see Sonic). There is a reason why after 25 years, a Mario game is always in the best of a generation.

Never played Rayman 2, I'll add it to my PS1 collection.
