If we look to Japan the Otaku demographic do fiddle around a lot with drawing conclusions about overall sales from the Amazon rankings. They have, for example, this website where you can study sales ranking over time on Amazon:

And this other one, which tries to predict total Anime sales etc from Amazon rankings:
http://www27392u.sakura.ne.jp/
It usually ends up in the right ballpark, but can vary greatly depending on if better offers are found outside Amazon, or from the behavior of the target demographic for a specific product.
Would be interesting to know if similar websites exist in the anglosphere..
