Having never been a big fan of Paper Mario (don't kill me. Only one i've played is Super) it seems like this was another case of Nintendo being experimental for the sake of, where it clearly backfired, although at the same time the innovations made could contribute well to a "proper" Paper Mario in the future. Few cases where change is universally bad and there's nothing to salvage, after all.
