The point is if you count the Wii the 7 gen consoles will always end up higher combined than the 8 gen. The problem with that is that it would make you think that the market is shrinking, while in fact the core gaming market could be growing. It's just the casuals that have moved on.

I think that makes sense. XBO/PS4 is growing, or at least selling faster than PS360 did for the first full year. WiiU shrunk considerably, as you said much of its crowd left.
However Wii still shouldnt be ignored. Its a part of history as well. Some of the reason PS2 sold for example was because it was a cheap DVD player, but we shouldnt exclude people buying it for that reason either. The market changes over the years but that is no reason to ignore the past either.

I agree the Wii shouldn't be ignored. It probably will remain the fastest selling console in history, and if PS4 would end up lower in sales than the Wii than nobody will deny the fact. However if you want to compare an entire generation, i think it's important to count in the fact that a lot of Wii buyers aren't regulars in the gaming community.
And i think when most developers are interested in the growing or shrinking of install bases of home consoles, they will mostly focus on Playstation and Xbox.
