Not quite. It's about making more money. If Nintendo can succeed in making money hand over fist making games on its own hardware that also appeal to people (not just kids, but probably that'd be the key mass demographic) who buy merchandise then that is the direction they should go in.
Would people rather they stick to only mario, zelda, smash bros, etc? Because I hate to break it to people, that might no longer cut the mustard. One giant mega hit like pokemon does not overcome an onslaught of other decent sized hit games.
