Never looked at hype that way, but you sure do have a point now that I think about it. I still remember all the hype PS1 & PS2 (even 3 managed to get a lot of hype, despite its price tag) and by that time I was still a very casual gamer, unlike today. I think there was a lot of word of mouth everywhere, and how people really wanted not just to play games but the whole package. It was hype and it's not different. But I think hype, the word tself, has many meaning: from the price tag, to the console's features, to the games, etc. Everything is hype and everything builds a console's successful lifespan.

Again, where was this launch hype for the PS1? I don't remember it. I recall far more hype for the N64 (with good reason).

I recall hearing about the very cool realistic graphics and the CD player. I can't say for sure the year it was, maybe between 95 or 96, but there was a lot of hype going on on TV for example. But I was a kid, so I can't recall all the details or exact date unlike in PS2 & PS3 era's.

...Let the Sony Domination continue with the PS4...
