I think it's a sign that Nintendo are indeed planning a "fusion" portable/home console for their next gen system. Since 3DS is already well into its life cycle I think this is basically meant to be a holdover  handheld of sorts that can be both new in some ways and also work towards extending 3DS' life cycle to a 6+ year span or so like the DS had. Until 2017 or so when I'm guessing the handheld/home console hybrid will come out.
