It's because it's the first RPG a lot of casuals played. Casuals did not know they liked RPGs until Skyrim.

It's almost the same situation as Final Fantasy VII, eh?

Oh forgot about that. I'm too young to remember FF VII. So Skyrim is the first casual WRPG then.
